The Parkduv Farm has a proud history of achievement in dairy farming and assisting in the development of the dairy farming industry. They have been part of their co-op’s monitor farm program and have won many milk quality and farming awards.
Kevin and Bernie Downing farm along with their farm manager Tom Carr, who has been with the Downings since the early 1980’s, and James Wycherley who joined the team in 2017.
The farm comprising of 68 hectares, is situated in Whitechurch which lies 10km north of Cork city at an altitude of 510 feet above sea level. They also farm 19.6 hectares of rented land, which is 1 km from the home farm.
The 100% Spring calving herd consists of 150 pedigree Holstein cows. 95% Dairy AI is used each year with a focus on improving herd fertility while maintaining the current high milk constituents.
All females are reared as replacements with the top EBI heifers kept each year to achieve a replacement rate of ~20% with surplus stock sold as in-calf heifers. Bull calves are sold at 3-4 weeks of age with the top EBI male calves reared each year for sale as stock bulls.
The Parkduv herd is ranked in the Top 100 herds in Ireland with a Herd EBI of €231. This has helped to drive the increase in the herds milk production KPI’s, as can be seen from the 10-year trend for Fat, Protein and Milk Solids graph below.
In 1997, the herd won the National Milk Quality Awards and in 1999, won the prestigious ‘Protein 350‘ award, having exceeded a successful protein target of 3.50%. In 2017, the herd won the Dairygold ‘Milk Quality Award‘ for consistently supplying the best quality milk to the co-op throughout 2017.
They also represented Dairygold at the national NDC & Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards in 2018 where they won Best TBC category award.
